How do I join?

5.26.2009

There I was, just google image searching Kathryn Grayson as we are all wont to do, and I came across this picture:

I immediately recognized this as the "Jealousy" scene from Anchors Aweigh (1949), as I'm sure you did. But I was a little confused by the arrow. In case youyou haven't already figured out what OBVIOUS website I found this picture on, here's another to help you out:

Yes, it's true. I stumbled upon the Washington State Gourd Society's (the Mu chapter) official website's page for GOURD SIGHTINGS. Gourd. Sightings. Not 'how to grow gourds' or 'how to cook gourds,' but rather a page "dedicated to gourd sightings in TV, movies, newspapers, and any other media."

A taste of some gourd-lovin' media:

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006)

- i.e. "The plates on the chiefs armor look a lot like squares of cut gourds." We're not even sure it's a true gourd sighting, but by gosh it's going up on the site!

The Office on NBC

- i.e. "they were having an office party and Andy was playing a Sitar made with two gourds." That actually belongs on the Washington State Sitar Society's sightings page, but it's not a big deal, we'll let it slide.

Steven Speilberg's Hook (1991)

- i.e. "2nd boy from the left is wearing a gourd chess plate." Gourd CHESS?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

- i.e. Season four, episode 21: "Buffy and the gang sneak into a military installation with a bag full of weapons and a magic gourd. The gourd is used to invoke the powers of the primeval First Slayer to defeat this season's "Big Bad." You can see the Colonel's discovery of the gourd at approximately 24 minutes into the episode." Thank God for the time approximation so I can get straight to the gourd action!

Christmas Vacation (1989)

- i.e. " I have seen this movie probably 40 times and never noticed the gourds in Clark's Griswalds office." Unbelievable! How could you miss them? Apart from the fact they look more like giant fake pears than gourds, so I guess you can give yourself a break.

And finally, perhaps my favorite for its sheer determination to find a gourd in the most random of places, Becoming Jane (2007):

- i.e. "I noticed a gourd birdhouse hanging in a tree during one of the scene's." Of course you did.

Be sure to check out the rest of the website with its information on gourd art, mini-retreats, festivals, photo galleries, and more! I will now be much more aware of gourds in my media intake, ready to alert my fellow gourdians to any sightings!
