I am actually insanely angry I only just now discovered this song.

"A Better Son/Daughter" by Rilo Kiley. It really would have been helpful to listen to in recent years. (Found again at Dooce. Is it bad that I want her to keep posting sad songs?)

...
Then you hang up the phone and feel badly for upsetting things
Crawl back into bed to dream of a time
When your heart was open wide and you loved things just because
Like the sick and the dying

And sometimes when you're on you're really fucking on
And your friends they sing along and they love you
But the lows are so extreme that the good seems fucking cheap
And it teases you for weeks in its absence
But you'll fight and you'll make it through
You'll fake it if you have to
And you'll show up for work with a smile
And you'll be be better, you'll be smarter
More grown up and a better daughter
Or son and a real good friend
And you'll be awake, you'll be alert
You'll be positive though it hurts
And you'll laugh and embrace all your friends
And you'll be a real good listener
You'll be honest, you'll be brave
You'll be handsome and you'll be beautiful
You'll be happy

BTW I have had 'Rootless Tree' on repeat since you told me about it. So thank you for that.

On the album, it's a much angrier song and he's screaming the obscenities.

The softer, acoustic Youtube version is better, I think, though there have been moments when I preferred to hear the angrier one. He does this one soul punching refrain where he is screaming "Fuck you! Fuck you!" and then for the last one, he screams "Love you!" with the same intensity (3:13). His most well known/radio played song is "The Blower's Daughter" which was heavily featured in the film "Closer" with Julia Roberts/Clive Owen/Natalie Portman/ Jude Law, but he hasn't really blown up yet.

And thank you, because you are constantly introducing me to music/performers I hadn't known about. You're helping to get me out of some musical ruts!
